Static IP addresses

Computers use IP addresses to locate and talk to each other on the internet, much the same way people use phone numbers to locate and talk to one another on the phone. A static IP is a network address that is permanently assigned to an individual computer or account.

If you have the following internet services, you may be required to have a static IP address:

  • Website hosting
  • eCommerce
  • Video conferencing
  • Remote access to computers over the internet
  • Access to a virtual private network (VPN)

You can get either a static or dynamic IP address as an add-on to your Brightspeed internet service.

  • Static IPs do not change. They are fixed and permanently identify a specific computer.

  • Dynamic IPs are IP addresses that change each time you log on to your computer and access the internet. They are invisible to the internet and ideal if you don’t need a permanent (static) IP address.

Most Brightspeed internet customers can purchase static IP addresses either singly or in blocks.
