Brightspeed compatible modems

Which modems are certified by Brightspeed and which are recommended for the service's optimal performance are covered on this page.

Being aware of modem compatibility

Every modem is designed to operate in a given speed range and with a particular sort of internet technology. Depending on your location and the speed you chose, Brightspeed uses several core technologies (fiber and other DSL kinds).

Why is this important? Even if you have a Brightspeed modem, it won't function unless it can handle the particular speed and technology of your provider.

A gateway from Brightspeed enables you to access the internet with WiFi-enabled devices without the need for additional hardware. The devices shown below are the newest WiFi gateways that we provide.

The appropriate gateway will be picked for you when you acquire internet service depending on the internet technology and speed available at your address.

Lease$15/monthNewer models include Secure WiFi
Purchase$150 - $200Includes 12-month warranty for repair or replacement

Rates subject to change. Taxes may apply.

Customers who solely use the internet might be able to acquire a new modem online.

As an example, check: Log in to My Brightspeed and select the Home or Services tabs to discover "My Internet." Then, to access online buying, seek for a link that says "Upgrade Modem." You cannot place an order online at this time if you don't see the link, but you may still be qualified for a Call or chat and an agent will help walk you through the process.

Certified Brightspeed modems

"Certified" denotes that our modems have undergone testing on the Brightspeed network to ensure that they operate as anticipated and are compatible with our internet-based system. All of the active Brightspeed-certified modems are listed in the drop-down menu below.

Note: Listed speeds reflect the maximum download speed the technology can deliver on Brightspeed services. In-home speeds may differ based on router setup, devices and other factors.

Don't see your modem listed?

If your modem is not on the Brightspeed certified or recommended modem list, it’s either a retired Brightspeed device or what’s called a third-party modem (from another provider).

Utilizing one of our accredited or suggested WiFi modems (gateways), which have been examined and found to function best with our high-speed internet technology, is strongly advised by Brightspeed. Devices that are out of date or from a third party are more likely to have performance problems and may not connect properly to your internet service.

If you're ready for an upgrade, contact us to purchase or lease a new modem.

You will get the best experience and performance by using certified Brightspeed equipment. Why? Our modem/router combo (gateway) is tested and guaranteed to be optimized for maximum performance and easy setup. Our modems also come with free 24/7 tech support. You can purchase or lease a compatible modem from Brightspeed to use with your service. If bringing your own modem is an option, you will see a note during the online order process. However, not all modems are able to connect to Brightspeed internet service. Check the drop-down above to learn more about each model of gateway offered.

"Certified" means our modems have been tested on the Brightspeed network to ensure they are compatible with our internet technology and that they perform as expected. Our technical experts determine the modem's maximum speed and check IP compatibility. All Brightspeed-certified modems include 24/7 technical support and free McAfee security protection.

If you are looking to use a different modem with your existing service, our representatives can help you determine compatibility. If you are ordering new service, you will be guided to purchase or lease the correct Brightspeed modem to get the best connection and performance.

What's the difference between a modem and a router? And what's a gateway?

  • modem connects your home network to the larger provider network. The modem is essentially what brings the internet into your home.
  • router transmits the internet connection to multiple devices in your home or business, either over a wired Ethernet connection or over WiFi. The router also allows your devices to talk to each other and share information.
  • gateway combines the function of both the modem and the router into one device. All Brightspeed "modems" are these 2-in-1 gateways.

The bottom line: For many customers, these three words are interchangeable. Since most internet users today prefer the term modem, we use that word across our Support Center. We sometimes call it a router when talking about WiFi. And, if you contact tech support, agents may refer to it as a gateway.
